For testing any small wind turbine at a constant wind speed I am building a small test stand with a powerful air blower.
Today I tested the motor system. A brushless motor drives a 3 bladed 36cm prop retrofitted from a large upright stand ventilator. A small adapter was turned on the lathe to mate the prop to the brushless motor. The motor is from an unused tool spindle from my CNC machine and desperately overpowered for this purpose, actively cooled at full load it takes 80A@32V. An electronic speed controller keeps the system at a constant speed. The controller takes orders via an analog input, i.e. a potentiometer or with a serial connection to a computer. An FTDI232 circuit is used to form the serial connection via USB.
The thing is pretty loud, I’ll take a short video later.
